What is a Boxing Gloves

Boxing gloves are cushioned gloves that fighters wear on their hands during boxing matches and practices. Unlike the ancient cestus which were designed as a weapon, modern boxing gloves are designed to protect the fighter’s hand during a bout, though competitions, sparring and other forms of training have their own specialized gloves. Modern boxing gloves reduce superficial facial injuries; however, as modern boxing gloves give their user the ability to throw stronger punches to head without damaging the hands, they also increase the risk of brain damage for participants.

Boxing gloves usually come with either lace-ups or velcro. In velcro gloves, the velcro acts as a second handwrap that adds more stability to the wrist. Lace-up gloves provide a more snug and secure fit, but unlike velcro gloves, require assistance from another person to lace, and are usually wrapped with tape before the match. Lace-up gloves can be converted to velcro gloves using a hook and loop converter.

Best Boxing Gloves Buying Guide : Things to consider while buying a Boxing Gloves

If you’re new to boxing, finding the best boxing gloves can seem pretty daunting. There are hundreds of boxing glove types, brands, and not to mention how confusing the sizing can get.

Choosing the right pair of boxing gloves is one of the most important things you can do when you’re just getting started. In addition to affecting the quality of your training, wearing the wrong boxing gloves can increase your chance of injury over time.

The amount of boxing gloves on the market today can be overwhelming, especially to people new to the sport who just don’t know where to begin. Everything from glove size and type to the overall design can be confusing without having some prior knowledge.

TYPES OF BOXING GLOVES

Despite all looking the same, boxing gloves can be specialized to perform different tasks. There are three types of training-related boxing gloves and two styles of competitive mitts. Each design has a unique quality that best suits its intended use.

BAG GLOVES

As the name suggests, bag gloves are meant to be used in heavy bag, speed bag or pad training. Bag gloves are designed with less padding in the knuckles than other boxing glove models. While it might seem counterintuitive to have a product with less padding, bag gloves are constructed this way to allow fighters to feel their punches and become accustomed to the impact. If an awkward punch is thrown or a fighter’s form is broken, they should be able to feel it in a bag glove and adjust accordingly.

TRAINING GLOVES

Training gloves are a great all-around option for boxers who are new to the sport.. These gloves are built with sufficient padding and can be used for both bag work and sparring but aren’t necessarily specialized for either. Training gloves can be a great introductory glove with ample support for novice and veteran fighters alike.

SPARRING GLOVES

In contrast to training gloves, sparring gloves are built solely for sparring and have extra padding, not only to protect you, but also your sparring partner. Sparring gloves will be sized the same as trainers but can be a tad bit heavier due to the extra padding.

COMPETITION BOXING GLOVES

Competition-level gloves are designed with the fight in mind. With less padding in the knuckles, these gloves are built for your opponent to feel your strikes. There are two levels of competitive boxing gloves: amateur and professional. Each follows sizing by weight division, with amateur gloves being more regulated due to the stricter rules at this level. A good way to typically identify amateur gloves is by the red or blue color scheme accompanied by a white knuckle overlay for easier scoring by judges.

Material

When it comes to the best boxing glove material, it really depends on how much you’re willing to spend on a pair of gloves. Some material will be much more durable and comfortable than others. The material used to make your gloves is a direct indicator on how expensive or inexpensive they’ll be. Better material means that the gloves will come with a higher price-point. Cheaper gloves are typically made with cheap material such as vinyl and synthetic leather.

Vinyl

Vinyl material is a good alternative if you can’t afford or prefer not to use real leather. The main problem with vinyl gloves are that they won’t be nearly as durable as real leather boxing gloves. Vinyl gloves will split over time, however they’re much cheaper than genuine leather. The good thing about Vinyl gloves is that they’re much easier to clean when compared to other materials. I would only recommend vinyl boxing gloves if you can’t afford other types of gloves, or if you’re a beginner who is looking for an inexpensive pair of gloves.

Synthetic Leather

Synthetic Leather (also known as Polyurethane or PU) is a lower cost material used for boxing gloves. It generally looks and feels just as good to use but it won’t be as durable as gloves made from real leather. Gloves made of this material are usually low to mid tier gloves, and are generally marketed towards beginners. These types of gloves will have odor issues if they’re used regularly and aren’t properly cleaned. These gloves aren’t recommended for advanced fighters or heavy hitters.

Genuine Leather

Genuine leather (also known as cowhide or goatskin leather) is normally durable, flexible, and controls sweat and odors very well when compared to other materials. Real leather is the primary choice amongst many professional boxers and fighters today. Cowhide leather is very comfortable and offers good stretch for the fist as it’s higher quality material. Goatskin leather is actually cheaper to use than cowhide leather, however both are well worth the price. I believe genuine leather is the type of material you find in the best boxing gloves.

Glove Size

Glove size is determined by several factors, fighter size, glove type, fighting organization and the type of competition being played. The larger you are, the heavier the glove (see the table below). Also, as mentioned above, training gloves also tend to be heavier.

Your body weight is the key determiner of glove weight, as heavier weights denote a heavier glove. For example, an 180lb fighter would want training gloves weighted 16oz or more, while a fighter of 120lb or less would want 10oz-12oz training gloves. These sizes and weights can vary depending on glove sub-type, competition and other select criteria.

  • Boxing gloves should be comfortable to wear and should give your hands enough support. They should not make you feel cramped, nor should they cause you any pain. You should also ensure that they give your hands enough grip on the boxing ring so that you do not end up damaging them and making your boxing less than ideal.
