Best Dishwasher | Buying Guide : Things to consider while buying a Dishwasher

Buying a dishwasher means you’ll spend less time worrying about the washing up pile and your dishes will be much cleaner than when washing by hand. The best ones leave plates clean and dry, cutlery shining and glassware sparkling, while saving water, energy and time.

Types of dishwashers

There are broadly four major types of dishwashers based on the requirements of the family.

Built-In under the Counter dishwashers

This is a common type of dishwasher where they install the appliance directly under the kitchen counter. This is a permanent fitting and hence, provides the most convenient setting.

You do not connect the faucet to the appliance. Therefore, the kitchen sink remains free even while the machine is running. This is a great appliance if you live in your own house.

Portable Free-Standing Dishwashers

Not everybody has the luxury of living in their own houses. A sizeable population of India lives in rented houses.

Naturally, they would not like to have the dishwasher as a permanent solution. The portable free-standing dishwashers are the perfect option for them.

The only thing you need is a parking space in the kitchen.

You can drag the machine near the sink, connect the ‘hook-up’ to the faucet and set your machine in motion. When not in use, they serve as an additional counter-top workspace.

Dish drawers

The dish drawer is the perfect type of dishwasher for the smaller nuclear families of today.

If you need a larger one, you can opt for the double drawer type instead of the single one. The best quality of the double drawer system is that they work independently of each other.

Countertop dishwasher

This dishwasher is similar to the portable one in many ways.

The only difference is that you have to place it on the counter near the sink. On connecting the hook-up to the faucet, you can start using it in the normal mode.

Material

Stainless steel is definitely more durable and preferred over the plastic ones. There are various reasons for the same.

Steel has the capacity of resisting stains and keeping out the odors. Transfer of heat takes place faster in steel tubs as compared to plastic.

Steel tubs can withstand higher temperature settings and is naturally energy efficient at the same time. They might be expensive initially but they save you a lot of money in the long run.

Hard Food Disposal Feature

This is certainly a priority feature if you do not like to scrape, pre-wash, or rinse your dishes before loading them into the dishwasher. Installed right in the unit, this feature eliminates food residue and grime during the initial rinse cycle, so it does not swish around your clean dishes during the final rinse cycle. Some models have self-cleaning filters, while others have filters that must be removed and clean manually—confirm the type of filtration system the dishwasher has so you will know what to expect in way of maintenance.

Energy Saving Considerations

A dishwasher that proudly displays the Energy Star symbol or that are certified by the Consortium of Energy Efficiency will save you energy dollars compared to non-qualified dishwasher models. Today’s dishwashers have become much more efficient to operate, but cycles have become longer. Some dishwashers have low water features or quick wash options which are handy if you are on metered water use. Another energy saver is a delay start option if your electricity usage is calculated on time-of-use rates—you can set the dishwasher to wash later when energy is cheaper.

Size

This is a very important aspect of purchasing any kitchen appliance. The capacity of the dishwasher you choose depends a lot on the size of your family.

They are available in 8, 12, and tall tub configurations.

The standard one is the 12 place setting that can hold a maximum of 12 quantities each of dinner plates, quarter glasses, bowls, saucers, and dessert plates.

Washing Cycles

The most important dishwashing cycles are light wash, regular wash, heavy wash (pots and pans), and economy settings. The economy cycle will air dry dishes, which saves on heating element energy costs. Enhanced cycles such as glass or stemware, rinse, quick wash, pot scrub, and sanitize wash are features you want to have but expect to pay more. A stainless steel dishwasher interior is a beautiful feature but will not improve washing performance—it is mainly a style option. However, a stainless steel dishwasher washing arm will not rust and will be more durable.

Performance Features

Performance is influenced by the number of washing levels—how and where the jets of water are distributed during the dishwashing cycle. A three-tier system will provide a good washing and more levels will ensure even better coverage, but it comes at an added cost. A quiet model is also a good option if your bedroom is located next to the kitchen and you run the dishwasher at night. Dishwasher detergent and rinse agent dispensers are usually standard features and ensure the right amount of detergent needed to clean the load. Electronic dirt sensors are definitely nice-to-have features. A child safety lock is important if you have small children.

Stacking and Racking Features

Standard dishwashers usually have two racks of dishes, but some models have three extending loading options and dishwasher capacity. Special dishwasher features can also include adjustable or removable tines, shelves, and racks built to accommodate tall glasses or stemware, oddly shaped and tall items, or convertible racks for multi-uses. A small closed basket for baby bottles and rings is also available on some dishwasher models.

Cutlery or Flatware Trays

The position of the silverware tray is usually a matter of preference and is generally does not affect washing performance. You might prefer a compact tray that sits on the bottom rack, and that easily removes for loading and unloading cutlery. Others prefer a model that is attached to the inside of the dishwasher door, which may take less room.

Control Panel

Control panel is more than aesthetics as it decides the look and feel of a dishwasher. It lets you choose the wash cycle, time left, temperature and other. Usually, control panel is present either on the front or on the upper lip of dishwasher.

Most of the dishwashers present in the Indian market have either button panel or touch panel. Touch panel dishwashers are much expensive than control panel ones. If you have a restricted budget, then button panel ones are better option. If not, then you can choose touch panel. No matter which one you choose, the controls and wash features will be same.

Drying Mechanisms

Apart from just cleaning the utensils, dishwashers also contain drying option which provides air circulation to completely remove the wetness and moisture. This lets you prevent the time waste that is required for manually drying the utensils.

Drying mechanisms of a dishwasher differ from one model to another. Below, we have provided common drying options present in most of the dishwashers.

  • Heat – This is the most common method of drying mechanism. In this technique, a steel plate located on the top of washer exhales heated air (170-degree Celsius) to evaporate the moisture. If you are using the heating system at this level, then it is recommended not to load any glassware or plastic, especially on the top shelf.
  • Fan – Most of the people prefer fan for drying mechanism as it is relatively better and compatible with all types of utensils. However, it takes more time to complete the process.
  • Condensation – This process is more hygienic, efficient and advanced drying mechanism than others. However, it is available only in dishwashers with steel interiors. In this method, the moisture will condense on the walls and utensils, which drips and expelled through outlet pipe.

Some dishwasher may have only one of these drying mechanisms, while some can have two or three of them. condensation mechanism is actually the best among these three. However, dishwashers with this technique can be expensive. Fan and heat are also best alternatives if you have budget constraint. But each of these techniques have their own benefits and drawbacks.

Adjustable racks: Some dishwashers come with adjustable upper racks – this means you can accommodate large plates on the bottom rack or lower the top rack to fit larger items, like wine glasses.

Automatic open door drying: At the end of the wash cycle, the door will automatically open by a few centimetres. This allows moist, hot air out and fresh air in to help items dry faster.

Child lock: This will stop curious children from fiddling with the buttons or opening the door mid-cycle.

Delay start: Get the dishwasher to start at a set time. This is great if you’d like to run the cycle during off-peak utility hours.

Fold-down tines: Tines are the racks where plates are placed. These can be folded down to make space for larger items.

Sensor wash: This will measure how dirty the plates and dishes are and adjust the amount of water used, and the length and temperature of the cycle.

Salt and rinse aid indicators: These indicators will light up when the salt and rinse aid needs topping up.

Dishwasher settings

Normal: Best for daily use. This cycle removes standard dirt and food stains with water at 60-65C.

Eco: This cycle is best for lightly soiled plates and cutlery. It’ll run for longer but will use less water than a normal or intensive cycle. It typically uses 50-55C water.

Intensive: Best for baked-on food. The water temperature will be higher, and it also gives the inside of the dishwasher a good clean, too.

Delicate: Best for glassware and delicate china. The water temperature will be lower than normal.

Quick wash: Best for when you’re in a hurry and the dishes aren’t too dirty. The temperature will be the same as on a normal wash (60-65C).

Hygiene: Best for items that need sterilising, such as baby items or chopping boards. This programme will wash at a high temperature.

Sensor wash: The dishwasher will have a built-in sensor to adjust the programme time, temperature and amount of water according to how dirty the dishes are.
