What is Audio Interface?
An audio interface allows the user to record and playback audio from a computer, sounds simple right? It can be once you know a little about how to choose the right audio interface for what you’re doing.
The built-in computer audio is pretty good sometimes but a professional USB Audio Interface will sound way better and allow you more options for recording and playback. A 2 channel USB audio type interface is what many DJ’s and personal home studio’s use for professional recording at home.
The job of the audio interface is to take an audio signal and translate that into your computer through what’s called an A/D Converter. This converts the sound you hear using a microphone and cable into the interface into 1’s and 0’s that represent…sound! Then that digitized sound can be stored, edited and mixed on your computer. The last job of the interface is playback back out of the computer to your monitor speakers reversing the process through something called D/A conversion.

Knowing how to choose an audio interface can be a challenge. There are plenty of things to keep in mind, including budget, features, specifications and, perhaps most importantly, the application. Whether you’re recording yourself, a large band, a singer-songwriter, or a string ensemble, we have an audio interface to fit your needs.
Audio interfaces are available in a huge range of configurations: with different inputs and outputs, different amounts (and kinds) of preamps, different ways they’ll connect to your computer, and additional features like included software as well.
In this audio interface buying guide, I will go through some questions that you might need to ask yourself when choosing an audio interface. Hopefully, this will help you to find the features that you need and the right audio interface for your home studio.
What hardware connections does my computer have?
Here is a list of the connections that your computer may have to be able to connect your audio interface:
- USB – The advantage of USB (3.0, 2.0, and 1.1) is that there are many audio interfaces that can run using the USB bus power (rather than an external power supply), which is excellent if you plan on doing any mobile recording with your laptop.
- Firewire – Firewire is becoming less common now, but the advantage of FireWire is that it transfers data at a more consistent rate than USB, which makes it slightly more reliable when you’re recording more channels at once.
- Thunderbolt – Thunderbolt has incredibly high speed and low latency. Thunderbolt 3 (which is found on the latest Macs) has twice the speed of Thunderbolt 2 and supports speeds of up to 40 Gbps and cable lengths of up to 100 meters using an optical cable. That makes it 8 times faster than USB 3.
- PCIe – PCIe is an internal card-based interface, which means that you can’t use these interfaces with laptop computers. When you install your audio interface into your computer’s motherboard, it will reduce latency and limit bandwidth by bypassing some of the data conversion processes. PCIe audio interfaces can handle high track counts and have near-instantaneous speed which is required for professional studios. This makes them more expensive than FireWire or USB interfaces. However, there are some affordable PCIe interfaces that allow entry-level users to take advantage of this format.
Some “hybrid” audio interfaces actually support more than one connection type, but selecting your input type will narrow your search down considerably.
How many inputs do I need?
So how many simultaneous inputs are you going to need? If you understand the concept of overdubbing then you know that you don’t need 20 inputs to record 20 tracks or 20 people in your band. You can record each member of the band one by one. But it’s important to know how many inputs you will need to record at once.
For example, if you are a singer-songwriter and you want to record your guitar and sing at the same time. Then you’ll only need two inputs to do that. Two microphone preamps, one for your vocal microphone and one for your guitar microphone. So two simultaneous XLR inputs is all you will need and that is a great starting point because you can overdub other things later.
Now if however, you want to record multitrack drums maybe you want four microphones on the drum kit a kick, snare, and overhead microphones then you’re going to need an audio interface with four microphone preamps.
You will need to have a think about how many microphones you will want to record at the same time. This will then help you decide how many microphone preamps you will need in your audio interface.
Now something to keep in mind here is that some audio interfaces will say that they have eight inputs but they actually only have four microphone preamps built-in, the other four inputs are line level inputs. This means that you can only input for microphones, even though it says it has eight inputs. So make sure you not only check the channel count but the number of preamps in there as well, that way you know how many microphones you can plug into the interface.
How many outputs do I need?
You may think that you only need two outputs on your audio interface for your studio monitors.
However, you may need additional outputs to create extra monitor mixes while your recording or you might want to incorporate outboard gear into recording/mixing workflow.
How many headphone outputs do I need?
Many audio interfaces only have one headphone jack output. If you’re just going to record yourself then that’s maybe all you’re going to need. You can plug your headphones into that jack output socket, create your headphone mix and you’ll be good to go.
If you ever plan on recording someone else, however, like a friend or some in your band. Then you’re are going to need two independently controlled headphone amps (jack outputs) on your interface. You can then have two separate headphone mixes and you won’t have to stress about trying to find another output or headphone amp.
Is it expandable?
Another thing to consider is potential future expandability. All of your needs will likely change and grow over time. You may only need two inputs right now but in a year or two, you may be recording more inputs at once.
If this is the case it might be worth considering an audio interface that has what you need now but also has some expandability options.
Other additional ports to consider on an audio interface:
MIDI I/O: having MIDI ports built in allows your audio interface to double as a MIDI interface. This enables you to connect MIDI controllers/keyboards directly to your audio interface. And will save you the time and hassle of trying to connect and configure additional peripherals to communicate with your MIDI devices.
Digital I/O: Digital inputs and outputs enable you to expand your audio interface’s input and output channels. The common types of digital connections are ADAT Lightpipe, AES/EBU & S/PDIF. These digital inputs and outputs allow you to connect additional mixers, interfaces, or pre-amps to your audio interface.
It can be hard to know what your needs are in the future, but it’s worth considering.
It might be worth buying something that’s a little bit more expensive that gives you that expandability in the future otherwise you’re going to have to sell that interface and get a whole new one down the road.
A high-quality ADC (analog to digital converter). What makes an audio interface higher quality is its noise floor and supported sample rate/bit depth. Cheaper audio interfaces have more noise, whereas higher quality interfaces will not have any noticeable noise.
High-quality preamplifier. This applies (ideally) a large amount of clean gain without clipping. You need a preamp on any mic input. Some mics, like condensers, might not need a ton of gain. Others, like the more expensive dynamics mics (such as the Shure SM7B), will need a lot more gain. A cheap preamp will get you about 35-40dB of gain and can be noisy at higher levels. A nice benchmark for a good quality preamp is 60dB, really good is 80dB.
Other things to consider
Consider whether you want XLR connections on the front or back of the interface sometimes front connections are more convenient.
